Oregon Thunder

Oregon Thunder

Classically trained, the musicians of Oregon Thunder pour their young hearts and souls into bluegrass so fresh and new you'll be an instant bluegrass convert. The future of bluegrass is in very good hands with these energy-charged teens from the Salem area who are making bluegrass history with their own arrangements and style. Since their first practice in September, 2001, this group has evolved into a tightly-knit single entity composed of individual musicians who are all solo-capable. Rounds showcase their individual talents, but the cohesive music they produce together is top-notch. Their alter-egos are typical, fun-loving students, but get them on stage and, just like Superman, they shed the trappings of every-day life and transform themselves into Oregon Thunder . . . listen to the applause and you'll know where the name comes from. Musicians Include:

Oregon Thunder's Caleb Caleb Ivanitsky, upright and electric bass. Caleb has been playing the bass since fourth grade. He has been a member of the Westside Singers, a Jazz Choir and ensamble,as well as his school orchestra. Caleb also distinguished himself by being chosen as a member of the Salem Youth Symphony. He has hobbies and friends, of course, but currently the most important thing is his life is "strummin’ the bass!"
Oregon Thunder's Erik

Erik Berg-Johansen, Fiddle/Mandolin. Erik's fiddle career began with classical violin training when he was just 7 years old. He soon discovered his love for fiddling, however, and the rest, as they say, is history (albiet a currently short one). He has performed solo for events from Portland to Norway. He placed fourth in the Oregon State Fiddle Contest (competing against adults) when he was 10 years old. Erik is still studying both classical and bluegrass music and was the Concert Master for the Walker Middle School (Salem) 8th grade orchestra. In his spare time he plays soccer, snowboards, and play computer games. Most of all, he likes performing bluegrass music. And he still just keeps getting better. Amazing!
Oregon Thunder's Evan

Evan Kurczewski, Mandolin/fiddle. Evan started playing violin at age 10 but his passion for Bluegrass started when his violin teacher, Ginny Hollon, encouraged him to join the Santiam Bluegrass Association. During weekly open jam sessions that first year, he was befriended by the whole "family" of bluegrass musicians and mentored by Ken Cartwright who introduced him to the mandolin. He was hooked after a couple of tries! His talents now encompass the banjo as well and he, too, has served as the concert master for his 8th grade orchestra. According to Evan, "BLUEGRASS RULES!" When he and Erik go head-to-head with their fiddles, it'll leave you breathless!
Oregon Thunder's Conrad

Conrad Henkel, Guitar. Conrad is the newest member of Oregon Thunder. He has played guitar for several years now. Although originally a rock enthusiast, he has switched gears to embrace bluegrass. He remains versatile, though, and is not ruling out any opportunities to perform. Conrad's good-natured, easy going style keeps Oregon Thunder well-grounded.
